Using the minimum spanning tree to trace mass segregation
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a new method to detect and quantify mass segregation in star clusters. It compares the minimum spanning tree (MST) of massive stars with that of random stars. If mass segregation is present, the MST length of the most massive stars will be shorter than that of random stars. This difference can be quantified (with an associated significance) to measure the degree of mass segregation. We test the method on simulated clusters in both 2D and 3D and show that the method works as expected. We apply the method to the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) and show that the method is able to detect the mass segregation in the Trapezium with a ‘mass segregation ratio’ ΛMSR = 8.0±3.5 (where ΛMSR = 1 is no mass segregation) down to 16 M⊙, and also that the ONC is mass segregated at a lower level (∼ 2.0± 0.5) down to 5 M⊙. Below 5 M⊙we find no evidence for any further mass segregation in the ONC.

A Metaheuristic Algorithm for the Minimum Routing Cost Spanning Tree Problem
The routing cost of a spanning tree in a weighted and connected graph is defined as the total length of paths between all pairs of vertices. The objective of the minimum routing cost spanning tree problem is to find a spanning tree such that its routing cost is minimum. This is an NP-Hard problem that we present a GRASP with path-relinking metaheuristic algorithm for it. GRASP is a multi-start ...
متن کاملA Stock Market Filtering Model Based on Minimum Spanning Tree in Financial Networks
There have been several efforts in the literature to extract as much information as possible from the financial networks. Most of the research has been concerned about the hierarchical structures, clustering, topology and also the behavior of the market network; but not a notable work on the network filtration exists. This paper proposes a stock market filtering model using the correlation - ba...
متن کاملDoes sub - cluster merging accelerate mass segregation in local star formation ?
The nearest site of massive star formation in Orion is dominated by the Trapezium subsystem, with its four OB stars and numerous companions. The question of how these stars came to be in such close proximity has implications for our understanding of massive star formation and early cluster evolution. A promising route toward rapid mass segregation was proposed by McMillan et al. (2007), who sho...
متن کاملOPTIMIZATION OF TREE-STRUCTURED GAS DISTRIBUTION NETWORK USING ANT COLONY OPTIMIZATION: A CASE STUDY
An Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) algorithm is proposed for optimal tree-structured natural gas distribution network. Design of pipelines, facilities, and equipment systems are necessary tasks to configure an optimal natural gas network. A mixed integer programming model is formulated to minimize the total cost in the network. The aim is to optimize pipe diameter sizes so that the location-alloc...

Mitigation of atmospheric pollution has been a topic of concern over the past decades. In this study, tree rings have been used to reconstruct past climates as well as to assess the effects of recent climatic and environmental changes on tree growth. Vehicular emission is one of the major sources of pollutants in the atmosphere and this study focused on the Haatso-Atomic road which over the yea...
